A PlayStation 5 that won't turn on is alarming, but it is often fixable. Work through these in order before assuming the worst.

1. Check the power source

  • Plug the console directly into a wall outlet, not a power strip or surge protector, to rule that out.
  • Try a different outlet you know works.
  • Reseat the power cable firmly at both ends — they can work loose.

2. Look for the standby light

Press the power button and watch the light. A short beep and a blinking light that then goes dark behaves differently than no light or no beep at all. No response whatsoever points more toward a power-delivery issue.

3. Power-cycle it fully

Hold the power button down until the console fully powers off (you'll feel/hear it stop), then unplug it for a minute, plug back in and try again. This clears a surprising number of "won't turn on" hangs.

4. Try Safe Mode

With the console off, press and hold the power button and keep holding past the first beep until you hear a second beep. That boots Safe Mode, where you can restart, rebuild the database, or update system software — any of which can fix a console stuck on a black screen.

5. Rule out the TV/HDMI

Sometimes the PS5 is on but you see nothing. Try a different HDMI cable and a different TV input — a damaged HDMI port or cable can look like a dead console.

6. Check for overheating & dust

If your PS5 was shutting off during games before it stopped turning on, heat may be the culprit. Dust buildup makes consoles run hot and shut down to protect themselves.

If none of that works: a no-power PS5 that doesn't respond at all often has a power supply or internal component issue — repairable, but it needs hands-on diagnosis rather than more button combos.

When to bring it in

If you've tried the steps above and your PS5 still won't power on (or you suspect a bad HDMI port or overheating damage), MidlandPCS in Columbia can diagnose it, give you an upfront price, and back the repair with a warranty. No appointment needed.
