A cracked screen does not always mean it is time for a new phone. Most of the time a repair is the smart, cheaper move — but not always. Here is how to think it through.

When repairing is usually worth it

  • The repair costs well under a replacement. If fixing the screen is a fraction of what a comparable new phone costs, repair almost always wins.
  • The phone is otherwise in good shape. Good battery, no water damage, runs fine — a screen is a quick fix that buys you years more.
  • You would lose data or setup hassle. Repairing keeps your phone, your apps, your settings and your number exactly as they are.
  • The phone still gets software updates. If it is supported and secure, keep it going.

When replacing might make more sense

  • The phone has multiple problems. Cracked screen plus a dying battery plus a bad charging port can add up.
  • It is very old or unsupported. If it no longer gets updates and feels slow, repair money may be better put toward a newer phone.
  • There is heavy internal or water damage. Sometimes the screen is just the visible part of a bigger problem.
The quick rule: if the repair costs noticeably less than replacing the phone and the rest of the phone is healthy, fix it. If the phone is old, failing in other ways, or the repair approaches the cost of a newer phone, consider replacing.

Do not forget your data
